ESTABLISHING THE BLUEPRINT TO CREATE THE DIGITAL STRUCTURE

RANGING FROM USABILITY STUDIES TO INFORMATION ARCHITECTURE WE EVALUATE THE ORGANIZATION OF DATA & IDENTIFY PATTERNS TO EXPOSE FUNCTIONALITY & INFORMATION THROUGH THE INTERFACE.

USING THE 3W’S AS THE BASIS FOR OUR WORK WE BEGIN TO ESTABLISH THE SKELETAL FRAMEWORK OF THE APPLICATION. THE OVERALL STRUCTURE OF THE APPLICATION IS DEPICTED WITHIN A NAVIGATION MAP IDENTIFYING KEY SCREENS AND USER FLOW. WIREFRAMES OUTLINE THE POSITIONING OF INFORMATION AND FUNCTIONALITY. THIS IS NOT AN EXERCISE IN DOCUMENTING THE EXISTING BEHAVIOR FOR THE DIGITAL ENVIRONMENT, BUT RATHER IMAGINING THINGS AS THEY MIGHT BE TO IMPROVE PRODUCTIVITY, INCREASE EFFICIENCY AND ENSURE A CONSISTENT MODEL FOR INTERACTIONS.

COMMON PRINCIPLES EXIST AND SERVE AS A CATALYST AT THE INITIATION OF THIS PHASE. THE PRINCIPLES COMPRISE WHAT IS COMMONLY REFERRED TO AS A HEURISTIC EVALUATION MODEL. IT INCLUDES CONCEPTS SUCH AS MATCHING THE SYSTEM TO THE REAL WORLD, ADHERING TO CONSISTENT STANDARDS, RECOGNITION RATHER THAN RECALL AND MANY OTHERS.

AS PART OF OUR PROCESS WE EMPLOY A USABILITY-TESTING METHODOLOGY TO INCLUDE USERS IN EVALUATING DESIGN DECISIONS THROUGH PAPER-PROTOTYPING, INTERVAL TESTING AND FULL, SIMULATION TESTING. THE GOAL IS TO MEASURE THE APPLICATION’S CAPACITY TO MEET ITS INTENDED PURPOSE. THE TIMING TO START TESTING IS INSTRUMENTAL IN THE PROJECT LIFECYCLE TO VALIDATE OR INVALIDATE DESIGN DECISIONS PRIOR TO PROGRESSING WITH FULL-SCALE DEVELOPMENT. THIS NOT ONLY ENSURES THE CREATION OF A USABLE EXPERIENCE, BUT ALSO REDUCES THE RISK OF DEVELOPMENT REWORK. THE CORE AREAS OF FOCUS ARE EFFICIENCY, ACCURACY, RECALL AND EMOTIONAL RESPONSE. WE IDENTIFY SCENARIOS ENCAPSULATING KEY TASKS TO ACCOMPLISH GOALS. IT IS IMPORTANT TO DISTINGUISH BETWEEN FEEDBACK SOLICITATION AND USABILITY TESTING. THE PRIMARY DIFFERENCE IS THE ACTIVITY OF OBSERVATION AND USER’S INTERACTION WITH SCREENS.
